Most sperm donor children to be fatherless

Lesbians and single women are on course to become the largest group to have donor insemination, new figures from the Government’s fertility watchdog suggest.

They accounted for more than a third of women (38 per cent) who had the treatment last year, compared to 28 per cent in 2003 and 18 per cent in 1999, statistics from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) show.

Ethnic sperm donor shortage

In the UK ethnic couples are being turned away because there is a shortage of sperm donors. One of the main problems facing the clinic is the recent law changes which now enable children to legally contact their donors on reaching the age of 18.
